I knew my life would always be centered around the arts. I graduated from college with a fine arts degree with a concentration in ceramics and I also went to graduate school for art history. For many years I was a full time potter but for the past few years I have returned to painting. I now create playful, vibrant and imaginative compositions that exuberantly express the vitality of life. I loosely base my images on reality but I am not interested in imitating reality. Instead I am more interested in deforming nature and intensifying color to create powerfully communicative art. I paint not what I see but what I want to see. By choosing contrasting colors and energetic forms I hope to express optimism and a light hearted humor in my work. My influences lately have been Van Gogh, Matisse, Klimt, Eastern decorative arts and my own imagination. I agree with the German Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner when he said 'the artist forms a world rather than represents it' and Van Gogh when he said 'What color is in a picture, enthusiasm is in life.'
